Gino Feltrin was almost killed in a motorcycle crash. “It wasn’t until we got to hospital that I realised I had two broken ribs, five cracked ribs, three fractured discs in my spine, and a partially collapsed lung. But they also found a strange shadow on my kidneys. Further scans revealed I had stage four kidney cancer. I’d had no idea before then that I was seriously ill. I would have not known until it would have been too late.” Incredibly this resulted in not only his own life being saved. Read the whole story…..

Although your particular tumor type occurs rarely, when all the different kinds of ‘rare tumors’ are taken together, they make up 20% of all cancers diagnosed. Despite this, as a group, they only receive about 5% of research funding. Researchers can’t find enough cases of each tumor type to study to make the progress needed to find better treatments and provide more information about your disease.

The Centre for Analysis of Rare Tumors (CART-WHEEL) is inviting people globally or their proxy to submit information about their tumor so researchers can develop new insights into these understudied rare tumors. See www.cart-wheel.org/Intro.aspx to learn more and register. In Australia, this project has been granted ethical approval by the Melbourne Health Human Research Ethics Committee based at Royal Melbourne Hospital which means that only with your consent, your information can be used to further cancer research.
